2 Youth’N Action 

 

  • Lorrin Gehring, a representative, came and discussed Youth’N Action’s mission and goals
    • Youth’N Action are an advocacy program that brings the youth voice to public policy and empowers at risk youth from ages 14 to 24 in order to bring a positive change to themselves and their communities.
  • Discussed the challenges of recruiting and retaining youth in advocacy groups.
    • For example, Lorrin discussed the intimation some youth may have of attending events with many adults and urged the need to make these types of meetings more youth friendly
  • Lorrin discussed the use of an “elevator speech” to attract youth and then other incentives to retain them for future sessions.
    • For example, can make terminology and acronyms easier to understand to lessen the learning curve and then have a “cool down” session where youth can ask questions they may have.
  • Popular locations where youth congregate was discussed.
    • A potential event for mental health and substance abuse was discussed and how to attract youth to these types of events.
    • Lorrin discussed previous Youth’N Action events, such as Stick it to the Shrink, open mic programs, forum theatre, and raffles.
  • Lorrin also discussed how to involve other systems of care and outside agencies (e.g. therapists, probation officers) in these types of events.
    • Also discussed the need for security in these events given certain affiliations some youth may have.

Meeting Minutes

1 ·         Looked at survey results from previous FYSPRT Meeting

 

o   Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Lack of Family Centered Education and Support, and Stigma were identified as areas of interest

 

2 ·         Discussion about Trileads ensued

o   Need five more to be in compliance

 

3 ·         Mental health/substance abuse kite day activity discussed

o   A mental health day involving consumers was discussed, potential to provide food and refreshments plus flying kites as a symbolic activity consumers can participate in

o   In the planning stages

 

4 ·         Health care center in schools discussion

o   Discussion ensued on how to move forward with the health care center in schools ensued

o   Other agencies and groups are already pursuing this idea and it was discussed they would a be valuable resource to begin the process of submitting the plans

§  Elementary schools was considered as one location for this center but certain legal issues were discussed, such as parent’s permission

o   At a minimum, it was discussed that each school should have a mental health professional on staff as they are trained to spot mental illness

 

5 ·         Discussion ensued on the various aspects of mental health treatment

o   The lack of mental health service follow up, such as after suicide attempts, was discussed

§  Additionally, other concerns were discussed as well such as lack of continuity, lack of medicine education, and the undermining of parental control

o   The age of consent for mental health services was also discussed

§  The key issue being the balancing of what the child needs but also what the parents perceive as the needs of their child
